Two of my New Year resolutions were to Get Trim and Get in Touch with my Inner Spirit. So when a friend touted Yoga to me as the perfect way to get both done, I decided to give it a try. Yesterday was my first class. At first I found the spiritual music and the chanting a bit strange. And the deep breathing exercises we started with actually made me feel quite dizzy! My instructor, a heftily built but extremely agile young man, told me this was quite normal for initiates.
I was taken through some fairly difficult poses (or so I thought) until I saw the exercises some of the more advanced students were doing – which included laying on their stomachs and bending their arms and legs backwards to touch each other in mid-air! At the end of the session, my muscles were aching but I felt strangely refreshed and peaceful. My husband doesn’t really understand what this is all about but I’m planning to drag him along with me. It’s a mentally calming and relaxing experience that I’m sure he will love once he tries it. I’m quite beginning to like this thing and can’t wait to “tie myself into knots” again today, as my husband would say!
